Calcium scaling on decorative tile

As we are slowly approaching spring in the Las Vegas area and it means everyone who has a swimming pool should start thinking about preparing it for swim season. Last week, we wrote a blog post about prepping your pool for swim season which included a variety of tips but we left out another division of our company which we want to highlight this week. In the Vegas area, our tap water is extremely hard and by hard we mean it’s loaded with calcium and other hardness minerals. Our tap water is sourced by the Colorado River which carves its way through the Grand Canyon where it picks up these hardness minerals. As a swimming pool owner, this is extremely important for you to understand because high calcium levels can cause numerous problems to your swimming pool. One way and the most common way that swimming pool owners recognize that it is high is by scaling on their tile and water features. It is truly an eyesore and when this happens it means a water change is necessary.

Swimming pool water evaporates. During the summer time it evaporates at a much faster rate but what most people think is that calcium levels will always be the same but that isn’t correct. As this water evaporates, the hardness minerals remain in solution and gradually increase in concentration each time more water is added. When this happens, the calcium will begin to scale the water tile line, the interior finish, your filtration equipment, spillways and water features. As you can tell from the picture above that is calcium that needed to be removed which can be extremely costly. To prevent this from happening in the future, we recommend changing out the water in your swimming pool at least every two years.

At Clark County Pool & Lawn we recognize the water issues we have in the Las Vegas area and want to introduce you to Reverse Osmosis (RO) Mobile Filtration. We have the ability to come to your residence or commercial property and recycle the water onsite. Some of the benefits of our service include:

  • Drinking quality water in your pool
  • The interior finish is never exposed
  • Most residential jobs are completed in less than a day
  • You can swim in the pool during filtration
  • Lowers calcium hardness
  • Lowers Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
  • Lowers Cyanuric Acid (CYA)
  • Lowers salts
  • Lowers phosphates
  • Removes waterborne diseases
  • Water conservation

Our mobile filtration trailer

This service is better than a typical drain and refill because our water in Las Vegas is hard. If you drain your swimming pool, the water used to fill it back up again is still hard whereas, with mobile filtration, we guarantee you better water than tap. The risks of damaging your liner are non-existant because it is never exposed and you will notice a difference in the feel of your water after we complete our job. With that said, if you want to swim in a pool this summer without dealing with skin dryness/irritation or red eyes, contact us today to book an appointment!
