Calcium Removal From Your Swimming Pool

Have you ever walked into a pool store and they told you your pool water is too hard? Chances are in the Las Vegas area this has happened to you once or twice. We say this because we have some of the hardest pool water in the country! In the swimming pool industry, your levels of Calcium Hardness and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are what the swimming pool industry refers to when they tell you your pool water is hard. This is going to happen to you and we want to use this blog post as an educational piece to help you with the steps you will need to take to prevent it from happening. First and foremost, our tap water is loaded with calcium, magnesium, and other hardness minerals which make it hard. Most homeowners are familiar with this because it scales their showerheads, countertops, and faucets. But have you ever thought about what it is doing to your swimming pool? It is actually a much bigger problem because of the cost involved, and most swimming pool owners are not familiar with what they are.

Calcium is in our tap water and as the water in your swimming pool evaporates the calcium and other hardness minerals remain in solution and gradually build up in concentration. When this happens, the calcium will scale your tile, interior finish, filtration equipment, decorative water features, and spillways. It literally destroys your swimming pool and filtration equipment. Once this happens, it begins to take life off your swimming pool and can be extremely expensive to remove if you choose to go that route. We say that because if you pay for a tile cleaner to come out, you must change out your water or it will come back quickly. Also, if you own a saltwater chlorinator, hard water can make it extremely challenging to operate because it will scale the electrode plates and prevent it from functioning properly.

When this happens, you have two options….. You can perform a drain and refill which is extremely dangerous when temperatures are above 80 degrees and only fills the pool up again with Las Vegas’s hard water again or choose to recycle the water instead.
