Recycling paper, plastic, and other products to reduce waste has become a habit, so why not recycle pool water? With all the drought and climate changes going on at the moment, recycling your swimming pool water instead of draining it seems like a wise decision.
Facing drought issues, the State of Nevada is changing and limiting new residential pools to 600 square feet. The forecasts show that this measure should save over 32 million gallons of water in the next decade.
If you want to try this relatively new process, try contacting a Las Vegas pool service and start recycling your pool water.
What is Pool Water Recycling?
The process of recycling your swimming pool water includes getting rid of any impurities, unwanted minerals, and salts from the water. The whole process of removing harmful contaminants from the water takes less than 24 hours, depending on the size of the pool.
The recycling process is done by pushing the water through enormous reverse osmosis filters, which pump out the pool water, process it, and then return it to the pool. The process doesn’t require emptying the pool, so it is safe for swimming while the system recycles the water in the back.
In short, the clean water is returned to the pool, and the dirty water is pumped out.
Other Uses of Reverse Osmosis
The main purpose of reverse osmosis is to lower water impurities so it can be reused over and over. The process used in recycling the water is basically the same one used for the purification and filtering of drinking water. This process also turns salty seawater into fresh water and makes it drinkable.
With many areas facing difficulties with fresh and clean water, the reverse osmosis process helps them provide the population with drinking water.
Why is pool water recycling necessary?
Homeowners drain pools to replace the hard mineral-loaded water with gallons of clean, softer, and fresh water. Hardness minerals build up over time, and as the water evaporates, the minerals remain in the water and become concentrated. In time minerals will plate the spillways, tiles, filtration equipment, and just about anywhere.
These minerals can also cause eye and skin irritation and limit the function of chlorine and other chemicals. This makes the water unsafe for swimmers and it’s the reason why pool services ask pool owners to drain the pool and refill fresh and clean water. Instead of draining it, pool owners can recycle the water.
Recycling or Draining
Draining and refilling over 15,000 gallons of water from your pool, and refilling it again is a huge waste of water resources. This is especially an issue in places that are struck by drought. Draining a pool also poses a threat to damaging the pool itself. Note that special procedures must be undertaken to protect pools from cracking and getting damaged.
This can all be avoided by recycling the water to remove the contaminants and make the water safe for swimming. Note that around 15% of the water that will be lost because it is drained into the sewer with the rest of the pool contaminants.
