According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children and adolescents need at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day. However, getting them out of the house can be difficult, especially on hot and sunny days.
Fortunately, there’s a way to coax your teens out and encourage them to be physically active while keeping them safe from the heat. Get your residential pool ready and help them beat the heat with these five fun pool games.
Octopus Tag
Octopus tag puts a twist on a classic game. The game starts as it usually does. You pick a player to be “it,” and they chase the other players and try to tag them.
The real fun starts once someone gets tagged. They link hands with the person who’s “it” and help them catch anyone who’s left. The first person to get tagged becomes “it” in the next round.
Greased Watermelon
This game is as fun as it is ridiculous. Take a watermelon, cover it in petroleum jelly, and place it in the middle of the pool. Divide your teens into two teams and have them compete to see who can bring it back to their goal.
It may seem weird to anyone who hasn’t tried it, but players can get surprisingly competitive. Just give it a try.
Don’t forget to reward everyone with watermelon slices afterward.
Pool Joust
Split everyone into pairs, a knight and a horse. The knight sits on the horse’s shoulder and holds a pool noodle, their “jousting stick.” Pairs go against each other and try to knock the other pair off balance to win.
Only play this game if the pool is wide enough. Otherwise, someone may injure themselves while playing. And ensure you supervise so that everyone stays near the middle of the pool.
Marco Polo
It’s Marco Polo in a pool. Pick someone to be it, blindfold them, and watch them try to tag the other players. When the person who’s “it” yells “Marco,” everyone else has to yell “Polo.” The first to get tagged becomes “it.”
Pay attention to the person who’s “it” since they’re blindfolded. Gently guide them away from the pool’s edge if they seem like they might injure themselves.
Volleyball
You’ll need a net and a ball for pool volleyball–items you can easily procure at your local store or online.
In case you don’t know how to play volleyball, it’s simple. Split players into two teams, one on each side of the net.
One person serves the ball to the other side. Each team can touch the ball up to three times before getting it over the net. They earn a point when the ball lands on the water of the opposing team’s court.
Pool Safety
Safety should be your top priority, so ensure you follow The American Red Cross’s home pool safety guidelines. Always have a water watcher, install anti-entrapment measures, and secure the pool with barriers when it’s not in use.
