Your above-ground pool pump is like a heart. It circulates water so your system can heat, filter, and chlorinate it before redirecting it back to the pool.
That’s why you must ensure you prime it if your pool is new or if you’ve just opened it after winter, or installed a new piece of equipment.
If you don’t prime the pump, it will build friction, eventually causing it to overheat. While you can always turn to professional service providers for pool pump repairs if this happens, it’s still best to avoid it altogether.
What Is Priming?
Pool equipment, in general, can withstand being wet or entirely submerged. However, pumps are designed to work only with water inside it.
Priming a pump simply means preparing it by filling it with water and ensuring little to no air is left inside. You need to follow just six easy steps.
1. Turn the pump off
The safest way to turn the pump off is to shut the power down at the circuit breaker.
2. Set the multiport valve to “recirculate
The multiport valve allows pool water to move through different ports and has seven settings. Set it to recirculate. This will direct water into the filter head and back into the pool.
3. Remove the pool plugs
To make the water flow into the pump, you must remove any pool plugs in the return jets and skimmers.
4. Prepare the pump
Before you fill the pump with water, you must:
- Release any pressure in the filter by opening the pressure valve or bleed valve. Close it afterward.
- Remove debris from the pump basket.
- Check the pump basket’s lid for cracks and ensure its O-ring is lubricated.
5. Fill the pump with water
Get a garden hose and fill the pump to the brim with water. You may notice the water go down as the water level in the pipes is low. Just keep putting water in it until it’s full.
6. Fill the pump with water
Ensure the lid is seated correctly to prevent air leaks, then turn the pump on. It is normal to hear gurgling and other noises for 30 seconds to a few minutes as it is sucking the air out of the system.
Slowly return the multiport valve to its original setting. Open the air relief or bleed valve on the filter housing until water comes out, then close it.
When to Prime Your Pool Pump
You must reprime your pump anytime there may not be enough water in it, such as when:
- You open your pool’s system.
- You open your pool after shutting it down during the winter.
- The water level goes down below the skimmer.
- You replace the pump or filter.
- You repair a pipe.
- You clean the pool filter.
