High Calcium Hardness Levels and Swimming Pools
As a residential and commercial swimming pool owner in Las Vegas, we are going to be dealing with high levels of Calcium Hardness and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in your pools. We deal with it because our tap water in Las Vegas is loaded with calcium, magnesium, and other hardness minerals. It has been said that we have some of the hardest water in the country which can make it more challenging to managing your pool. Since we constantly fill up our swimming pools due to evaporation with this hard water it will cause problems to your swimming pool. The most common problem is scaling to your water tile line, filtration equipment, and interior finish of the swimming pool.
Since we fill up our swimming pools with hard water, eventually the Calcium Hardness and TDS levels will increase in concentration. It rises in concentration because as pool water evaporates the hardness minerals remain in the water and gradually build up in concentration. As time goes by eventually the water will get to a point where calcium scaling will occur on the water tile line, the interior finish, filtration equipment, spillways, and decorative water features. When this happens it can be tough to look at and even more challenging and expensive to remove. In the swimming pool industry, the normal levels of Calcium Hardness (CH) in water are between 200 – 400 parts per million (ppm) and TDS is recommended to be below 3000 ppm.
In our area, it isn’t uncommon to see swimming pools with calcium levels over 1000 ppm and TDS far over the recommended level. When that happens, most pool professionals will recommend a drain and refill. At Clark County Pool & Lawn, we recommend recycling the swimming pool water using our Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration system because we can not only give you better water than tap but we can also conserve up to 85% of the existing water in the pool as well. If you choose to use this service, our sister company Pure Pool Purification will provide the service.
We have been filtering residential and commercial swimming pools in the Las Vegas area for more than five years and have had incredible success with lowering Calcium Hardness, Total Dissolved Solids, Cyanuric Acid, phosphates, nitrates, and so much more. We have noticed that by using RO filtration the water quality is much better and it leads to a much better-looking swimming pool.
