What is included in pool maintenance and why is it important to have?

Do you know water chemistry? Do you have the time to clean up your swimming pool on a regular basis or after storms? If you answered either one of these with no or if you’re looking for ways to make your swim experience more enjoyable than it’s time to give that job to a professional. To properly maintain a swimming pool, it goes far beyond just adding chlorine and brushing the steps of the swimming pool. Understanding proper water chemistry is a must and knowing appropriate levels is also extremely important. When it comes to water chemistry the following is the breakdown:

  • Chlorine
    • 1-3 parts per million (ppm) in the winter
    • 3-5ppm in the summer
  • pH – 7.4-7.8
  • Total Alkalinity (TA) – 80-120ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid (CYA) – 30-50ppm
  • Calcium Hardness (CH) – 200-400ppm

Please note, if you own a salt water chlorinator some of the above levels will be different. Please refer to the owner’s manual to make sure your water is balanced for the system. As for water chemistry, it needs to be checked at least once or week or more often when the water is warm. Algae love warm water and can grow quickly.

Pool Cleaning

When it comes to pool cleaning, you will need to do the following:

  • Brush the tile, interior finish, benches, and steps
  • Skim the surface of the pool for debris removal
  • Empty the skimmer and pump basket
  • Vacuum as necessary
  • Backwash as necessary
  • Observe filtration equipment for leaks

Those are just a list of the basics that must be performed weekly to prevent staining, water chemistry changes and to prevent possible filtration issues if left untreated. There are other maintenance things that will occur over time but you will want to make sure to check chemistry and clean the pool once a week. During the long hot summer months and after storms it might be necessary to clean your pool more often.
