Draining versus Recycling A Swimming Pool

With spring approaching and swimming pool season about to start, many residential and commercial swimming pool owners start the process of thinking about getting their pools ready for the season. Our tap water is loaded with calcium, magnesium, and other hardness minerals and is one of the biggest reasons why swimming pool owners need to drain their swimming pools. In the Vegas area, the water coming out of the tap is roughly 400 parts per million (ppm) and higher. The recommended Calcium Hardness (CH) levels for a swimming pool are between 200 – 400 ppm and it isn’t uncommon for us to see CH levels as high as 1000 ppm and more in our pools. When this happens, you will notice calcium scaling on the water tile line of the swimming pool, interior finish, and water features if you have them. Visually this can be extremely devastating to see on the tile and decorative water features but it also ruins the interior finish of the swimming pool and your filtration equipment too. Based on the above information, with water this hard, it’s recommended to change out your water every couple of years.
